Piikani Warriors Complete 100 km Buffalo Hunt

We, the Siksikaitsitapi, share this land with the buffalo (Inni), to whom we both belong. Each spring, we renew our relationship through ceremony and song.

Our connection has remained strong, even through the challenges of colonization and genocide, when the Inni became scarce.

Today, we celebrate our resilience and success, having survived and continued to be guided by our traditional ways of knowing.

Following the path left to us by our ancestors, we are renewing our reliance and relationship as hunters. Through this, we validate and reaffirm the sacred bond between our people and the Inni.

To our warriors: our return to the buffalo hunt is another step closer to the life our ancestors enjoyed for thousands of years. Through this hunt, you have proven that the spirit of our ancestors has survived within all of us, and will thrive again.

Your knowledge and remarkable ability is rooted in powerful history, and it is an honour to acknowledge your successful fulfillment as Piikani Warriors.

In a hunt that spanned 100 km on foot, every step taken was a step made by us all.

Parks Canada: We look forward to continuing our strong partnership and appreciate your momentous effort. Reconciliation is possible, and your part in enabling this hunt is not overlooked.

Each hunt brings us closer to the life our ancestors intended for us, and we acknowledge the entirety of our people, both past and present, who diligently uphold our stories, culture, and lifestyle.
