Under the direction of the Chief Operating Officer, the Justice Manager will be responsible to oversee the Justice Program for Piikani Nation, including the management and supervision of staff, program development, and maintenance of relationships with internal and external sources. This position requires a dynamic and innovative individual with a good knowledge and understanding of Blackfoot history and culture, and the social and legal challenges of Indigenous peoples.  This individual must also have good interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with government personnel, the legal and judiciary systems, and other Piikani departments to address and advance the justice needs of Nation members.

Job Duties

  • Oversee and supervise the Piikani Justice Program, including staff, volunteers, and committees
  • Facilitate and support the involvement of Elders, youth and community members in the delivery of the justice program
  • Manage the department budget
  • Ensure federal and provincial funding agreement objectives are implemented
  • Participate in audits, program reviews and evaluation of justice programs
  • Work with Elders, youth and community members to develop and deliver programs to address crime and healing in the community
  • Develop relationships with other justice service providers locally, provincially and nationally to remain informed of innovative and emerging trends and initiatives
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of potential funding sources as they are announced, and research and analyze the relevance of these funding to meet Piikani needs
  • Develop and prepare proposals to access funding to enhance capacity of the Nation to support community members
  • Collaborate and work in partnership with other Nation departments to develop programs and services that support a holistic approach to meet community members’ needs
  • Collaborate with other Justice departments within the Blackfoot Confederacy to develop programs and services for the needs of the Blackfoot Nations

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the Criminal Justice System, the Child, Youth and Family Enhancement Act, Provincial Statutes, and Treaty Rights
  • Knowledge of Blackfoot history, culture, traditions and ceremonies
  • Knowledge and understanding of historical trauma and impact of colonization (Sixties Scoop, Residential Schools, UNDRIP, MMIWG, TRC, and others) on Indigenous communities and a trauma/restorative justice approach to addressing these impacts
  • Strong skills in computer literacy, communication, both written and verbal, time management, organizational, mediation, and public relations
  • Experience in project management and capacity building
  • Must be willing to travel and work flexible hours with minimal supervision
  • Reliable vehicle with valid Class 5 driver’s license, and up-to-date driver abstract
